Case Study: Cooke Optics

PPS Training at Cooke Optics

Cooke Optics produce world class, high precision lenses that are used throughout the film and TV industry. Their products are seen as some of the best in the industry, with an Oscar to prove it. Their design and engineering team has a wealth of knowledge and experience in each their specialisms, however the team identified variation in their problem solving capabilities and that they needed to create a ‘common language’ to improvement.

Objectives
  • To upskill the design and engineering team of Cooke Optics in Practical Problem Solving (PPS) tools and techniques

  • Use the training to identify a list of real problems faced across the product development lifecycle

  • Prioritise a single problem and apply the PPS methodology to find a robust solution

  • Conduct a series of on-site workshops to enable the whole engineering team to collaborate around a single problem

  • To create a common approach to solving problems throughout the organisation going forward

Improvement Activity
  • 22 people were given access to Click2Learn’s eLearning platform

  • Each person conducted between 5-10 hours of self guided learning in PPS tools and techniques

  • 2 group based coaching sessions were delivered online by Click2Learn

  • Individual assignments were submitted and reviewed by our coaching team

  • Review and prioritisation of issues captured by the team, with support from Click2Learn’s expert coaches

  • The team elected to use in-person workshops to tackle a specific problem related to long product development lead times

  • Throughout the workshops the team were able to apply the tools and techniques learned in the online training, directly to their chosen problem and identify containment, root causes, options and ultimately a set of robust solutions their chosen problem

Result
  • 22 people are fully training in Practical Problem Solving.

  • A common approach to improvement has become established throughout the team

  • Product development lead time has reduced from 9 months to 6 months.

  • This will enable to business launch and sell new products to market sooner and meet ever changing customer demands

  • Additional outcomes from the PPS workshop are: the internal quality checks are more robust, supplier quality has improved, and production defects are spotted sooner
