Cooke Optics produce world class, high precision lenses that are used throughout the film and TV industry. Their products are seen as some of the best in the industry, with an Oscar to prove it. Their design and engineering team has a wealth of knowledge and experience in each their specialisms, however the team identified variation in their problem solving capabilities and that they needed to create a ‘common language’ to improvement.
Objectives
To upskill the design and engineering team of Cooke Optics in Practical Problem Solving (PPS) tools and techniques
Use the training to identify a list of real problems faced across the product development lifecycle
Prioritise a single problem and apply the PPS methodology to find a robust solution
Conduct a series of on-site workshops to enable the whole engineering team to collaborate around a single problem
To create a common approach to solving problems throughout the organisation going forward
Improvement Activity
22 people were given access to Click2Learn’s eLearning platform
Each person conducted between 5-10 hours of self guided learning in PPS tools and techniques
2 group based coaching sessions were delivered online by Click2Learn
Individual assignments were submitted and reviewed by our coaching team
Review and prioritisation of issues captured by the team, with support from Click2Learn’s expert coaches
The team elected to use in-person workshops to tackle a specific problem related to long product development lead times
Throughout the workshops the team were able to apply the tools and techniques learned in the online training, directly to their chosen problem and identify containment, root causes, options and ultimately a set of robust solutions their chosen problem
Result
22 people are fully training in Practical Problem Solving.
A common approach to improvement has become established throughout the team
Product development lead time has reduced from 9 months to 6 months.
This will enable to business launch and sell new products to market sooner and meet ever changing customer demands
Additional outcomes from the PPS workshop are: the internal quality checks are more robust, supplier quality has improved, and production defects are spotted sooner
